Candidate nominations open May 1 for Newmarket’s 2026 Municipal Election

Newmarket, ON – April 27, 2026 –Prospective candidates can soon begin filing their Nominations for the 2026 Newmarket Municipal Election. The candidate nomination period opens on Friday, May 1 and closes on Friday, August 21, 2026 at 2 p.m.

This October, Newmarket voters will choose the people who will provide direction about the Town’s services, growth, and priorities — decisions that affect everyday life, from local roads and parks to community programs, events, and well-being.

Available offices include:

  • Mayor
  • Deputy Mayor & Regional Councillor
  • Ward Councillors (one representing each of the 7 wards)
  • School Board Trustees for:
    • York Region District School Board
    • York Catholic District School Board
    • Conseil scolaire Viamonde (French public school board)*
    • Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir (French Catholic school board)*

Process for filing nominations

In 2026, candidates can register online or in-person. The Town’s Election Portal allows prospects to submit required documents and book nomination meetings. To request access to the portal to file your nomination, contact the Newmarket Elections Office at elections@newmarket.ca or 905-953-5152.

Town of Newmarket will post the names of registered candidates on the election website at newmarketvotes.ca . The list will be updated regularly throughout the nomination period.

*French-language school board trustee positions

Candidate nominations for Trustee positions for the French public school board, Conseil scolaire Viamonde, and the French Catholic school board, Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir, are administered through the City of Vaughan.

Are you on the Voters’ List?

As part of preparing for the 2026 Newmarket Municipal Election, eligible voters are encouraged to confirm, update, or add their voter information in advance at RegisterToVoteON.ca.

Review your school support designation

Residents are also encouraged to review their school support designation by June 1st, which determines which school board trustee elections they can vote in.

The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) offers an online tool to help residents check and update their school support designation, if needed, at mpac.ca/schoolsupport.

About the 2026 Newmarket Municipal Election:

The Town of Newmarket, along with municipalities across Ontario, will hold a municipal election this October to elect members of Newmarket Council and regional school board trustees.

Newmarket voters will have 10 days to vote, from October 17 to October 26, 2026, at 8 p.m. Voting will take place online, allowing electors to cast their ballot using an internet‑connected smartphone, tablet, or computer from a location convenient to them. For voters who prefer or require a paper ballot, in‑person voting by appointment will be available at the Town of Newmarket Municipal Offices.
